Bridge of Sighs

Today we went back to St Mark's Square and visited the Doges Palace.

We have been before on our first trip to Venice but that was about 15 years ago. One of my outstanding memories from that first visit to the Doges Palace was following the marked route, from the opulent apartments and senate rooms to the prisons, and suddenly realising the route was taking us over a canal and I was actually walking across the Bridge of Sighs.

Today we went back to relive that moment. The bridge joins the Doges Palace on one side of the canal with the prisons on the other and it was the sighs of the prisoners as they went to their fate that gave the bridge its name. Although having seen the prisons I think I would be doing more than sighing as I went across.

This blip is from inside the Bridge of Sighs (crossing from the prisons back to the palace) and looking out to the Ponte Della Paglia (the bridge with all the tourists) and in the distance the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
