Finn sings for Gigi Pierce and Aaron Salazar

Sue and I attended a vigil held at the Q Center, also known as Portland’s LGBTQ Community Center, to mourn the murder of yet another Transwoman of color, Gigi Pierce. Rabbi Deborah Kolodny led a prayer of mourning, and Finn sang while keeping rhythm on a bucket drum wrapped in a feather boa. One of the speakers also spoke of the horrific beating and mutilation of Aaron Salazar, a young gay man, this past weekend. Gigi’s family and friends joined Aaron's friends and the local Queer community and their allies in singing,

Sometimes I want to sing about the light,
Sometimes I want to cry, cry, cry.

Earlier today three women walking on a sidewalk were seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver who appeared to drive his car up onto the sidewalk and ram their bodies intentionally.

Rabbi Kolodny said at the vigil, “Cultures that don’t mourn their dead become violent. Let us make room for mourning.”
