Pitmen painters, carrier pigeons & gala banners...

…at Woodhorn this afternoon…

We saw on the local news that there was a new exhibition alongside the permanent Ashington Group gallery – previously unseen works by the “Pitmen Painters”, on loan from private homes and collections.

It was also the opening of an exhibition by Narbi Price – his work originating in a PhD at Newcastle University, and informed by the materials and methods of the Ashington Group.

We've seen the permanent collection and roared with laughter at the play, so off we went this morning - only to have a warning ping on the A189 near Ashington that one of the tyres had suddenly lost pressure…. Hurrah for Kwiksave *Kwickfit - thanks dollydoug & dc for spotting the error ;) ( other tyre firms are available ), who did a great job removing the nail, patching the tyre and getting us back on our way ;)  The new exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

My blip today is an installation in the hall that houses the miners’ association banners. 500 young people from Ashington worked with Woodhorn Museum and artist Bethan Maddocks to prepare it.  It celebrates Ashington’s 150th anniversary, and the tradition of flying homing pigeons – each pigeon carries a message about the town -  past, present or future. Hope you like it!
