British Wildflowers series, No. 8

Bird’s-eye Primrose. Primula farinosa.
This little beauty grows about six inches tall. To grow well it needs rather special conditions. It is restricted to limestone areas and likes places where lime rich water runs or seeps through peat. Its. Favourite part of the country is the limestone hills of North Yorkshire.
Here, however, it is growing in unusual Marl soil at the edge of a lake in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The latin farinosa means floury. The stems in particular are covered in a fine floury coating and this can be seen in the photograph.
