Ready for Flight
Extraordinarily handsome Condor 54
He’s 14 years old and was born in captivity..

We saw him fly in last night to roost on Navajo Bridge. This morning we were up early to wait, three hours, for him to fly. When he did, I captured a series of out-of-focus images. However, #1 was able to get a super image.

Condors mate for life, and 54’s first partner died of lead poisoning.. He played the bachelor a few years. Now he’s with my girl H9.

Last year, this pair laid an egg visible from Navajo Bridge. What a thrill to photograph.
Sadly,, 807 hatched a few days after we returned to Colorado and died a week later. Cause of death, unknown.

This year, they’ve placed the nest in a different cave, and are caring for a hatchling. Fingers crossed.

This is the longest I’ve been without internet. We’ve been searching for Condors, and waiting for Condors in places away-from-it-all.
