Between the black clouds and silhouetted houses...

Yes, the sunset poked through! Across the valley, on a hillside, for a few frames, at least.

Tried, unsuccessfully, to crop heavily as letterbox format and one weighted by the sky, emphasising the mass of black cloud. And one at full height, which really didn't work and lost all impact.

I haven't increased the contrast, but did open up the shadows and used my 70-300mm on a tripod on the DX format D7000, giving 450mm. The final image is almost full width. I had the tripod to take other landscapes at dusk but I knew that this was the 'one' (or a few frames either side) instantly, there and then.
