The Hospital Visit

So, what started out as a nice morning at soft play, catching up with friends, quickly turned into Little D being in extreme distress and a trip to the Sick Kids. One minute he was fine, playing happily, then he was crying uncontrollably in what looked to be a lot of pain, holding his stomach, shaking and temperature rising. We got in the car and sped to the hospital, with Elaine Rudy and Erica following in a taxi. The staff at the hospital took Little D straight into a room and gave him a double dose of medicine. After having cried for an hour he fell fast asleep and only awoke when the doctor was examining him. He did not object to any poking or prodding and was in fact in fine spirits, even replying 'Yes' when the doctor said 'You're a handsome boy, aren't you?'.

With his temperature back down and him smiling, laughing and playing we just had to stick around for the doctor to get a urine sample. Simple...just ply him with juice and we'll be out in no time! Three hours later we were still there and still no pee. Little D was right as rain though, and was eating for Scotland. With 4 kids in the room, Elaine and I had to keep them as happy as possible so we had a little picnic of sandwiches, oaty bars, crisps and halloween sweets which seemed to do the trick.

We left hospital with no sample but with 4 children desperate to play, so headed back home and the kids enjoyed time together while Elaine and I had a large glass of wine. Little D was the happiest little boy and you would never have guessed he'd had such a rotten morning but I guess that sums up kids, they're so resilient and bounce back so quickly.

Seems there's nothing like a hospital visit to make a child instantly better, and the parent feel like an over-protective, paranoid psycho!

I'd just like to say a huge thank you to Elaine for being there with me, keeping me calm and helping with the kids. I couldn't have done it without her.
