Crazy About Birds

Mama

Out on our walk again this morning, at a slightly different point in the road from where we saw the fawn on Monday, this adult female deer suddenly crossed the road ahead of us, jumped the fence that surrounds the hayfield (which sometimes has cows in it - but nothing at the moment except hay that is begging to be cut) and kept on running. And then a few moments later her tiny fawn - I'm guessing Monday's fawn again! - came across the road and slipped under the fence and followed her. It was immediately basically invisible because the hay is so tall, and all we could see of her was the top of her head, and occasionally a bit more of her when she leapt up. Suddenly she turned left and went back to the fence in a different corner of the field, jumped over it, crossed back over the road (further ahead of us and around a corner) and disappeared into the woods. Just as I was wondering whether her fawn had any idea where she'd gone, I saw it pop out of the hay and under the fence to follow her! Those little things are smarter than they look. Meanwhile, I only got two photos, both of her. This is the best one of those - as she was leaping left and about to reach the fence line.
