The wonders of reproduction

Ferns can reproduce asexually using spores formed in sporangia. In most ferns the sporangia develop underneath the normal photosynthetic leaves. In some, however, the sporangia are produced by highly modified leaves whose only function is reproduction. An example of such a fern is shown in the photograph. Sadly, I have quite forgotten which species of fern it is, if I ever knew!

Thanks to Knottman2 I now know that this is a Royal Fern.
