It's Grim Up North

Lancasters, Grange-Over-Sands

A town, which until recently managed to boast a full compliment of independent shops, but even here, where the average age of the residents must be 65, and some of the shops still don't take new fangled credit and debit cards, the shops are failing to thrive. This is sad, this town centre should be preserved as a tourist attraction/museum piece.
Today I noticed that the undertaker has closed his hardware shop and the hunting, shooting fishing emporium was having a closing down sale.
Meanwhile, Lancasters, above;  shoe shop, kitchenware and DIY store (takes cards but doesn't trust this contactless stuff) is struggling to get staff and their remaining DIY assistant is 77.
According to the owner's daughter, potential  employees aren't prepared to run up and downstairs to fetch stock from the cellar, students can't communicate and Polish women don't understand the nuances of shoe shoppers' English well enough. I wasn't bold enough to ask how much they were prepared to pay new employees and which newspaper she read.
