Day 162/18. Lesser but still fearsome....

We moved some of the wood from our old decking today and found this chap rummaging around.
It is a Lesser Stag Beetle. I think this is a male, around 30mm long. I added my finger for some scale (but kept my finger clear of the nipping end). It's a big chap and looked in perfect condition.
This is the smaller cousin of the well known Stag Beetle. Though smaller, it is still a very large beetle but it doesn't have such enlarged mandibles as the male Stag Beetle. It is completely harmless to humans although can give you a bit of a nip with its pincers if you give it a finger to investigate.
An impressive insect. It was not squished, but after its photo call was moved to some dead leaves and rotting wood further into our shrubberies.
