Surprise!

Look what I found!

I was gazing out the kitchen window when I saw a fluttering on the big heap of dead cabbage tree leaves under the cabbage trees. Through my binoculars I could see a starling chick and guessed that it had fallen from the nest above. It was clearly too young to fly. With camera in hand I crept up on the heap and was surprised to see three of them. As I approached they burrowed under the leaves and disappeared.

Back in the house I kept watch for a few minutes. Two adult birds are feeding them. However they are not safe there. They should be 3 metres up in the tree.

Starlings, Sturnus vulgaris
