North Ronaldsay

A 15 minute flight from Kirkwall arriving at the bird observatory at 8.00 in time for breakfast. A full on day with a special tour of the lighthouse, the tallest land based lighthouse in the UK. It’s fortunate the last lighthouse keeper is passionate about maintaining this one, an Alan Stevenson lighthouse first lit in 1854. The lens is original. We walked and talked, looked for N Ronaldsay sheep on seaweed and lucky enough to meet a lovely couple from London, she was a knowledgeable birder. A communal meal in the evening of about 30 people. The place is run by young volunteers, all interested in the amazing bird life around them. Off to bed just before 10.00pm. We have another day here and leave on the 5.45 flight this evening.
