High on a hill

Today turned out to be a glorious one - a blue, cloudless sky and warm sunshine. This afternoon we drove to Angus' Garden in Glen Lonan, where minibuses were waiting to take folk 1,500ft up Beinn Ghlas to visit the newly completed Sheiling, local man Sam MacDonald's tribute to Deirdre of the Sorrows, a maybe legendary Irish figure once said to live in Glen Etive. It was also built as a tribute to his late wife.  Sam is on the left in this picture and ringing the bell in the second extra.

After an astonishing drive up a twisting track we arrived in the middle of a huge windfarm, where The Sheiling, a small excavation on the side of a hill, is walled with stone and contains a sculpture of Deirdre and her lover Naoise and a bell. It faces the most astonishing view over Loch Etive. For anyone who cares to walk up, it takes, apparently, from a hour to an hour and a half, depending on your fitness. It will be worth it, especially on a day such as today! After descending we were treated to a wonderful picnic!

My extra shows the view down to Loch Etive.
