Legacy

Oilseed cake breaker designed and built by Harrison McGregor & Co Ltd at Leigh in Lancashire circa 1930.

In the early days of animal nutrition one of the main sources of protein was imported oilseed cake— by-product of vegetable oil crushing.

The cake was hard as tarmac with the appearance of planings. The purpose of the machine was to reduce the cake to a digestible size for inclusion in compound feed

The machine lay idle in a corner of the workshop for many years and was recently refurbished by engineer, Gavin Forrest.

Gavin is quick to point out these are not the original colours nevertheless he has done a wonderful job taking care to pick-out the makers name in the cast iron.

For me the colours work well and I am sure the engineer who designed and built the machine all these years ago would be proud of his legacy.
