Bar Jerez

About 10 years ago the ground floor of the building in the foreground was a bar that we occasionally used to sit outside. It was called the 'Bar Jerez'.

Apart from the bar, the building was occupied by one 82 year old woman who lived in a flat upstairs with her dog.

Then it was decided to build a small students residence building adjacent to it. This new multi-coloured building can be seen to the its left.

One fine morning, the construction work next door caused the building that housed Bar Jerez to collapse. Fortunately the old lady had gone out to that bank that morning and so was not at home. Unfortunately she had not taken her dog with her. There was no sign of it and the building was in too precarious a state to search through the ruins. Meanwhile officials ordered that the remains of the building must be completely demolished.

Accommodation was found for the lady in a local old peoples home.

The following week, workman at the site, found the dog in the portion of the upstairs flat that hadn't collapsed. It was hungry but still alive. It's owner was of course over the moon to be re-united with her companion.

When I first heard of the collapse and of the lost dog, I thought the dog had been unfortunately named. When I heard it had been found I changed my mind. It had been given an English name, "Lucky".

The 'Bar Jerez' was not so fortunate. It never re-opened, although the building was re-constructed to be similar to the original.
