“Southern Maid” and “Dr Syn” at New Romney

Went cycling on the Marsh, Romney Marsh, a 30 mike round trip from West Hythe via New Romney calling in for early refreshments at Lathe Barn, Donkey Street after 2 miles then at the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway at New Romney after 20 miles for further refuelling.

These are favoured stopping places on this ride. There are other places of course, but these two are part of the experience.

Despite a stiff NE breeze most of the ride was in favourable conditions with the wind either behind or broadside, the last 8 miles were into the teeth of the North Easter which seemed to strengthen as we turned into it along the shoreline back through Dymchurch.

We were hoping for a swim at Dymchurch but the choppy waters and high tide looked as if they were going to conspire against us.

However, as the tide went out conditions calmed allowing me to take the plunge. As always once the getting in has been achieved it the water was pleasantly refreshing.

Today’s blip is of the RHDR at New Romney where “Southern Maid” has arrived with a train from Dungeness. In the background is “Doctor Syn” (named after a local smuggler) which is waiting to take the train forward to Hythe.
