South Stromness, Orkney

Late evening, looking towards the south end of town and the Hoy Hills beyond.

Extras are from the other day at the Ness Battery Mess Hut which had murals painted on the interior walls during WW2.  These murals depict Kent countryside and village life and were painted by A.R.Woods (from Kent, England).  (They are:) the caravans section after restoration; a corner section including the village pub; other works of A.R.Woods.
The point of interest about the murals is that they were (probably) done to make the military personnel feel more at home.  Wartime small-town Stromness was probably a bleak posting for them.
