Leipzig Memorial

One of the great things about staying with someone in Airbnb is that you find out all sorts of interesting things to do and places to go, that you might not have come across otherwise. Leipzig is literally throbbing with bikes and we join the throng. We stop off at a moving Holocaust memorial where 140 chairs sit on the site of the Grand Synagogue that was destroyed in 1938 and act as a reminder of the 14000 Jews that used to live in the city. Across the road is a banner (see extra)proclaiming words by Goethe: Das Land, das die fremden nicht beschutzt geht bald unter. (The country that does not protect strangers will soon be destroyed).
J.S. Bach Worked in Leizig and composed his St. Matthew Passion whilst at St. Thomas church. By a happy coincidence it is the Bach festival and the St. Matthew passion is being played at Thomaskirche. And we have tickets. We sit in the choir stalls, with Bach's remains buried at our feet. Literally!
