We studied communist China at school in history. I could never understand why when Mao (who had already demonstrated a highly ruthless streak) invited people to come forward with their criticisms of the current state, otherwise highly intelligent people didn’t see the obvious downside of outing themselves as highly talented possible opponents of the leadership. It did not end well.

I was thinking of this because of the open, and apparently tolerated, dissent among the less intellectually endowed wing of the Conservatives (there is no clearer example of the saying ‘in the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is king’) about Brexit.

Not that they needed to out themselves, but do you think Theresa is planning a crackdown? I’d be more than happy to volunteer to administer some punishment beatings to Jacob Rees Mogg. I bet the queue for Boris would be too long.
