Das Schunkelfest
Every suburb of Wiesbaden has its own little club that organises an annual festival. They are pretty much all the same - there are things to drink, to eat and various attempts at entertainment. And everybody goes. It doesn't matter what age you are, you'll be at your Festival.
The atmosphere is always pretty good (weather dependent) and it seems to me that when you give a gathering of Deutschen a bit to drink and then play some "musik" then it is impossible to stop them from joining in somehow.
Some dance. Some sing along. And many of them will start "schunkeln".
I am not a Schunkler.
For one thing I can barely make out the lyrics of all these songs that everyone around here knows by heart. It's the cultural equivalent of asking a German to finish off "It's Friday, it's 5 O' Clock, it's...."
This particular Festival was in a part of town that I don't know, but it was a chance to catch up with friends. And I like doing that.
The banner that you see here could only be read on the way out. I suspect the organising committee had been at the schnapps a little early.
I will always be der Ausländer at these things but I enjoy the company and I enjoy trying to take part. That's the whole idea of integration oder?
