Arbour Low
Mr E and I decided to head back up to the Peak District. We got to the cottage just after lunch, dropped the bags and went straight out again.
Arbour Low was our first destination, situated in an elevated position and commanding great views. The stones have been pulled over but still lie in a circle within the henge. It is thought that this was done during medieval times because of the fear of paganism. A short distance away is Gib Hill, where a burial mound sits on top of a long barrow. The mound, when excavated, contained the remains of one human and the usual offerings and is thought to have been built 2000 years after the long barrow. Now it is home to a herd of fresian cows, who were luckily uninterested in us and the two Scottish Deerhounds traipsing across their fields.
