Pond skaters

The pond skaters were all gathering in a heap this evening. It looked as if they might all be feeding on something, but when I scooped them up with the net, there was no sign of anything other than the skaters themselves. I think that I remember seeing this once before, a few years ago. Does anyone know what they are doing?  (There's another shot in Extras.)
