I went to Homebase this afternoon and bought a rat trap, and set it up with peanut butter. Quite quickly it was triggered but didn't catch anything. re set it and now the waiting game, I had a search around and found no sign of holes in my garden or anything in the compost bin.
As there were lots of carrot batons in the fridge I turned them into carrot burgers with harissa and strong cheese.
