Northern Exposure

Ginger

I was trying to take pictures of the cornflowers still blooming in our garden but the cats had other ideas and kept shoving their faces at the camera.

Listened to an article on the radio the other day about Scots having the highest percentage of the red haired gene in the world (no great surprise there really). What was interesting was that they thought it was possibly linked to lower light levels and those with red hair and fair, freckled skin being best able to absorb vitamin D etc under the north atlantic cloud cover. Kind of makes sense really.

Wonder if the same applies to cat hair colour? I was speaking to someone from Cat Protection who reckoned there was a much higher proportion of ginger cats in Orkney, especially amongst female cats which is very unusual elsewhere apparently. Then again, given the thickness of our cats winter coats at the moment I suspect cats don't absorb vitamin D through their skin at all.
