In The City (XVI) - Remnants of the past

Bigger

Probably not what you'd expect from my ongoing "in the city" series, this isn't a view of Manchester that would spring to mind for a lot of people.

I took this when it was pretty dry, it's started raining that horrible drizzly mizzly fine rain that looks like it's going to be here for months.

(Taken in Castlefield this morning.)

EDIT: What you see here are remnants of Manchester's heritage.
About two minutes walk behind me are the remains of the uncovered Roman ruins from when the fort of Mamucium existed.

The pillars that make up most of the photo are from the original railway line, close to where the world's first passenger railway terminated at Liverpool Road railway station.
There is also a smaller footbridge in the distance that is close to where many of the local canals cross around what is now known as Castlefield Basin.
If you're that way inclined, you can read more about the history of Castlefield here.
