Peninsula Light

Beautiful boat, in a beautiful bay, and more. From an afternoon island stop and explore. Good to find some shade in the trees.

First extra - waiting on the Nicola for the tender to take us and gear to the kayaks in the morning. There had been a badger on that shore the previous evening, and we'd watched it nosing about from the boat. Was surprised to see it, and very much thought of them as a more northern species. Suspect it was having a go at the nest of some evil looking and huge hornet like things that were about us and vanishing into a hole when we landed. They were still about this morning, but I thought better of investigating.

The tides here are weird, because there's none, or next to no tidal effect that we're so used to at home. Shoes or sandals have to be worn when walking into the sea, or when touching the seabed, as there are many small black sea urchins with long and very nasty spikes. Step on one with a bare foot, and the holiday's over, aside from time in hospital.

The support boat, and others, find small bays to drop anchor, then turn out to sea, and run a stern rope ashore to keep them in place. We mostly had a small bay to ourselves, save for one night when another larger boat anchored nearby, and parallel to us.

Olive trees grow wild everywhere, and the geology of the area appears to the untrained me, to be all limestone. In the evening a large flock of Bee-eaters swooped by around the bay, which was something of a wow moment for me, though they weren't close enough to see their beautiful colours. A tarp was put up to shade the foredeck, and give some peak sun (burn) time shade. That was left up for the rest of the boat time, so no more starry overhead nights for those (most) of us sleeping there.
