It's Grim Up North

Leaving

Last evening of the holiday, but though we will be back again in the autumn and next spring, our years here will soon come to an end. D and M who own this croft will soon turn eighty next year and as M says, she doesn't want to work when she's 80.
I'm standing on the veranda of the log cabin we stay in, taking this photo. In many ways I'm more than ready to see other places, do other walks, visit other pubs and restaurants, but the croft is irreplaceable. You can stand here and see dragon flies, tree creepers, sea eagles, seals, porpoise and otters without having to move an inch. The evening brings deer, pine marten (sometimes), bats.
The croft was once a community of seven houses and the ruins of each black house remain, with their animal pens behind them. D and M have improved the land and the three properties on the land in the 50 years they've been here. They're not sure what will happen next. Either of their sons would be willing to take over, but their wives aren't so keen.
