Sparkle

Mum, Dad & I booked on a guided walk to Ros Lepa or Devil’s Step. Part of the walk crosses a beach however and sadly the tide was not sufficiently low for us to do it. It’s more than a little concerning that the water remained higher than the Guide expected!

Nevertheless we did part of the walk which took us steeply uphill through dense vegetation to this striking area where lava had previously met waves and created weird shapes. It was very beautiful as the sun sparkled on the sea below.

Our guide also pointed out cinnamon bark, vanilla plants, bread fruit, various sorts of palm and mango. Mum had the misfortune of discovering the viciously serrated long leaves of pineapple plants all by herself but we accepted the guide’s offer of walking to a waterfall instead of to Ros Lopa.

We crossed a new boardwalk through the mangrove swamp, where grow seven varieties of mangrove. Curiously their roots often grow upwards out of the water so that they can extract oxygen from the air. Bright red-shelled crabs, long shelled snails and newts abound on the sand underneath and I spotted some beautiful funnel fungi (in extras). Overall it was an interesting afternoon.
