This is Market Street, normally the busiest street in town, choked with cars on double yellow lines, shoppers, buses, tourists etc.
However once a year we have the Lammas Market, it takes over the town centre for a long weekend. It starts on Market St., then on Monday & Tuesday the whole of South Street as well. It’s the continuation of a medieval hiring fair, though ploughmen & dairymaids no longer are seen to be putting themselves up for a years work.... now it’s cheap clothing & fairground rides. The last few years have been improved by continental food stalls, excellent saucisson, olives & so forth. Let’s hope it continues, a lot of people hate it. Me, mixed feelings, but I’d hate to see it go!
This is the street emptied ready for the market to come in, the council workmen were measuring the pavements for the stalls.
