Rock Stop Cafe

The morning weather was typically West Highland, so the first stop took in the North West Highlands Geopark Visitor Centre in Unapool. Perfect timing ensured completely missing the only downpour of the day, whilst we perused the essential geological equipment in the shop (Maps and guides, purple hard hats & full-size cuddly salmon).

The centre is situated at Unapool, overlooking loch with a magnificent view of the Glencoul thrust. The story says that when the 19th century geologists looked at the succession in the cliffs, they were puzzled by the presence of older rock layers overlying younger layers. This could only be explained by tectonic forces at depth in the Earth's crust thrusting the older layers over the younger ones over distances of up to 100km. This was quite a big leap for the science of the time as crustal tectonics as we know it was not explained fully until the 1930s.

Extra: another sunset of Loch Assent
