Hanging around

Against the odds, we had a gloriously sunny day for the SLFG meeting to Careby Wood. Eleven botanists spent about five hours walking slowly round this replanted ancient woodland, poking into every corner to see how many species we could record. By the end of the day we had over 200 species noted, our most exciting find being a couple of plants of Wood Barley, last recorded from the site fifty years ago in 1968 (see extra). We'd also had a very sociable time and plenty of exercise!

Much of the flora was looking rather tatty, so instead of anything botanical I've opted for a fresh and beautiful Migrant Hawker for my main image. This was hanging in the branches of a Hazel bush, warming itself, and was quite happy for me to approach really quite close with my macro lens.
