After the rain

A morning mooching in Cambridge then back to the boat just as the rain started. We set off in rain, ate lunch as it poured, and learnt about boat safety and canal history as it pelted.

It was a surprise when the pounding stopped. We looked up to the sun struggling through dark sky. The reflections of reeds and drought-yellowed grass glowed in the Cam, identifiable in front of us and broken into abstraction by our wake behind. Herons, grebes, moorhens, families of swans then, rising over the flatness, Ely cathedral.
