Matfen

Lunch out at the village of Matfen in Northumberland today.  Almost every town and village in the UK has a war memorial honouring the dead of the two World Wars.  Matfen is a small village and I always find it very poignant when I see how many young lads from these small villages lost their lives.

In England and Wales places that lost no men in the Great War are known as Thankful Villages.  At the last count 53 civil parishes had been identified as having all their serving men return from the First World War.   No thankful villages have been identified in Scotland or Ireland.
