Sir David Baird's Monument

On a circular walk from Creiff, west beside the river to Strowan, then south and back over Knock Mary.

Sir David Baird's Monument is on a small steep hill at Strowan. The path and the hilltop are rather overgrown now; I don't think it can be visited much.

Sir David was a general with (according to Wikipedia) much military success but somewhat in the shadow of Arthur Welleseley (later Duke of Wellington). His monument includes the touching tribute: "Honour and duty were the guiding stars of his destiny. Piety and charity the leading characteristics of his mind. He felt no jealousies, He harboured no resentments. He knew no guile." Perhaps exaggerated, but it's hard to imagine it being claimed of any modern leader!
