Remember When

Once upon a time many many stations had a station hotel. I have stayed in a few of them over the years. Some of them belonged to the railway companies.

The Station Hotel in Aberdeen was one of these hotels, one of 55 such hotels that came under the ownership of British Rail as a result of the nationalisation of the rail network. Most of those still owned by British Rail were sold off in the Thatcher years, Aberdeen’s Station Hotel was sold in 1983.

One former British Rail Hotel I would like to visit, at least for one night, is the Midland Hotel in Morcambe. It has been featured in at least one episode of Poirot. Maybe we will make a visit next year?
