The Corpus Time-Eater

The Corpus Clock was conceived and funded by John C. Taylor, a former member of Corpus Christie college. It stands outside the Taylor library and is a large sculptural clock with a 24c gold-plated, stainless steel face. It displays the time by opening individual slits, which are back-lit in blue. The dominating feature is a grim-looking metal sculpture, similar to a grasshopper, which is the clock's escapement mechanism and produces a grinding eerie sound in motion, invented in the 18thC by clockmaker John Harrison. Deliberately designed to be terrifying in a dramatic way, it is to remind viewers of the inevitable passing of time. He will eat up every minute, and as soon as one has gone he is salivating for the next. As for me, I'm just 'salivating' for the next blip !!
