Brick Pits and Kiln

As it’s Bank Holiday Monday, we decided to go on the spur of the moment to Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire.

We have been there many times but on this occasion stumbled across a brick ruin on the edge of the Fen close to some ponds.

It turns out that back in the 1800’s this part of the Fen was a brick yard with a kiln and a wind pump to keep the clay pits dry. It continued working until around 1901. This image shows what is left of the building. You can just make out the kilns.

Fascinating history.
