Albino Slug

Almost squashed this little bloke on the cycle path along the Water of Leith, and another two bikes almost squashed him as I was trying to take his portrait. I had to stand over him to prevent the splat.

The opening on his head is his pneumostome which he breathes through and he has got two sets of tentacles - the top ones are optical and the bottom ones are for smelling. This one was having lunch of a squashed berry on the path.

Slugs are hermaphrodites. I found this nice bit of slug trivia:
"A commonly seen practice among many slugs is apophallation, when one or both of the slugs chew off the other's penis. The penis of these species is curled like a cork-screw and often becomes entangled in their mate's genitalia in the process of exchanging sperm. Apophallation allows the slugs to separate themselves."
...which is nice.
