General Wladyslaw Sikorski 1882 -1943

A commemorative plaque on the wall of The Elphinstone Hotel, Biggar, Lanarkshire where in 1940 General Sikorski inspected the Polish army in exile.

Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 the army fled and many were billeted at the nearby Thankerton Camp as well as the homes of locals who had accommodation

The General eventually became the first Prime Minister of the Polish Government in exile.

His loss in a plane crash of Gibraltar in 1943 was a severe setback for the Polish cause
