Heddal Stave Church and Telemark

Today was an early start for a 2 hour trip to Telemark - or more correctly Vemork near Rjukan .It was the scene of the brave attempt by Resistance fighters and S.O. E. to prevent the Nazis from using heavy water to build an atomic bomb . A film with Kirk Douglas was made about it . The power station is situated precariously on the side of a mountain - we had to cross a very narrow suspension bridge which they sabotaged to get there . A fascinating account in the museum about what happened as well as an interesting display about the regions industrial history.
The valley has very little sunlight in Winter so they have placed mirrors on the hillside to shine light into the valley as well as a cable car so children can be taken to enjoy a few hours sunlight in winter. Hard to imagine on a sunny day like today.
Lots of signs for Moose but we didn’t spot any . Acres and acres of beatiful fir forests .
The stave church at Heddal is a delight built in the sixteenth century and in parts even older. Impressive inside with paintings on the wall and of course a strong smell of wood .
