The fight to save Roehampton Playing Fields
Following another half-baked attempt by Wandsworth Borough Council to rid themselves of the responsibility of running our local playing fields, our local community has banded together with the playing field users (schools and clubs in the area) and formed a management trust. The aim being to maintain the playing fields for the whole community and counter the threat of over-commercialisation and exploitation for profit - and to protect the open space and banish the ever-present threat of residential development should the space suddenly become too costly and underused.
But the battle is far from won yet and the Council are still dead set on 'giving away' a 30yr lease to their buddies in TFC Leisure. So much for being worthy custodians of public property and promoting healthy activities in the borough. It all hangs in the balance and their decision could fall any day.
