Severndroog Castle

Severndroog Castle is a folly standing in Oxleas Wood at the top of Shooters Hill SE London, a few miles from my Mum's house (the tiny figure is Mum doggedly walking toward the light looking for somewhere warm to sit!). Although not obvious from this angle, this is a triangular tower built by an heartbroken widow in memory of her husband.

In 2004 it was one of the subjects of the BBC show, Restoration, which featured historic places at risk, with the aim of gaining support for a programme of work to restore the building and open it to the public. Although it did not win support, the Trust who took over the building from Greenwich council after they could no longer afford its upkeep, has since been awarded over £0.5 million from the lottery fund.
