How many toes has an elephant?

This is the trunk of an eastern red cedar at ground level. It reminds me of an elephant's foot. I have recently discovered that an elephant has a different number of toes on the front and back, that it actually walks tippy-toe on its toenails, and that the African and Indian elephants have different numbers of toes.
