Tonbridge Castle...

...whose history goes back to 1066 and the battle of Hastings. After his victory, William the Conqueror distributed land to his relatives and great barons and these individuals were given the right to construct castles on their new estates. Richard Fitzgilbert, Richard of Brionne, was rewarded for his loyal service at Hastings with a grant of land in Tonbridge....and there begins the story of the castle Gail and I visited today. (Well worth reading its history.)

Equipped with audio guides we enjoyed the reconstructions within the castle and I climbed the turrets and got a magnificent view over the town, and of the preparations for a Medieval Pageant this weekend.

After a delicious Thai lunch near the castle, we were the only two passengers for the 3pm trip along the river Medway. So quiet and gentle today.

Gail planned the visit, I did the driving; a great team and all a big surprise for me. Thoroughly enjoyable.
