Not that posh, really

Made famous among Radio 4 listeners and some readers by the stories of Edinburgh law academic Alexander McCall Smith, this is the less grand tenement tucked round the north-east corner of the street.

In the 1806 contract between the developers and the City Council, the feu for properties on the street was set at a minimum of '5 shillings per foot in front'. The detailed stipulations as to design, materials and use of buildings laid down by the Council at this early stage in the development of the New Town are astonishing.
