Statues

I was in London (again) for another meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee.

It was a gray , damp morning when I left Edinburgh but sunny and warm by the time I got to Westminster.

Walking across Parliament Square i was struck again by the eclectic mix of figures represented by the statues which are always the focus of much photography.

The juxtapositions are sometimes as interesting as the single items .

Here for example is that fine image of Nelson Mandela whilst behind him stands Robert Peel , a reluctant but in the end decisive , champion of Catholic emancipation though , in these days of Tory civil was over Brexit, much more discussed for his decision to put country before party over the repeal of the corn laws, an action which split the Conservatives for a generation.
