Political protest in Budapest

Budapest: An evening of political protest against recent government changes to the electoral law.

I stumbled on it by chance on my way home from the Chain bridge. Elections are due in 2014 and the Fidesz ruling party has annoyed the opposition by introducing many changes since sweeping to an overwhelming majority in the last general election. A new constitution, new laws, a new broom... At least that's the theory though my Hungarian is far too limited to judge the finer details.

This gentleman doesn't seem to think much of the prime minister, or those aound him, if I read his sign right.
The protest was very good-natured and consisted mainly of people over the age of 55. This in itself is significant - the Hungarian politcal spectrum still bears the scars of old conservative/socialist dividing lines and a younger generation has yet to step forward to fill the gap. There are some younger politically motivated activists but not many and in general a bitter atmosphere hangs over politics in a country that was so important in helping bring about the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Wall.

It was an interesting evening and you can see more photos here
