Lyceum Theatre of Varieties

The Lyceum opened as a 2600 seat cinema at the end of 1938, built on the site of the 1898 Lyceum Music Hall, which itself had been converted into a cinema in 1923 but had burned down in 1937.

In 1974 it was converted into a bingo hall and 480 seat cinema. The cinema closed in 1981, and the bingo hall in 2006. It’s been unused since then.

There is some hope that it may be revitalised, maybe as a concert/events venue, and possibly with the cinema reinstated. It’s clearly in need of some attention, and it will be interesting to see if it can be successfully redeveloped.

The screen over the windows shows what it would have looked like in its prime.
