Brooksie's World

The Sharp End

Back in Rothbury today so decided to have a bit of a wander whilst the kids where on a "nature hunt"!

Discovered this old tower and on closer examination I found out that it is, Sharp's Folly. This was erected by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sharp, Rector of Rothbury 1720-1758 for the relief of unemployment amongst local stonemasons and to be used as an observatory.

So in effect it was like an 18th Century benefits scheme!

Nice thing though.
